Food Processing Plants and Line in Nepal
Every consignment bound for Nepal has a sea leg that finishes in India. Equipment is discharged at a gateway — Kolkata (Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port), Haldia, or Visakhapatnam, which is deeper and less congested — then moves in bond under the India-Nepal Treaty of Transit. Naming the gateway in the contract matters: congestion at Kolkata against the longer haul from Visakhapatnam is a trade-off the buyer will have a view on.
Clearance inland
Sirsiya dry port at Birgunj is the primary customs point and the only dry port in the country joined to the gateways by rail. Biratnagar is the secondary route, with a Kolkata-Biratnagar rail cargo service opened in July 2026, and Bhairahawa also takes traffic; since November 2025 all cargo types may be routed to Biratnagar and Bhairahawa instead of a restricted list. Quote through to ICD Birgunj so the inland leg is not left open.
Sealed transit under ECTS
The Electronic Cargo Tracking System lets a container cross India sealed and be cleared at the Nepalese border without being opened or inspected at the Indian port. In use since February 2019, it was widened by India's CBIC in early November 2025 from Birgunj alone to cover Kolkata, Haldia and Visakhapatnam to Birgunj by rail, Batnaha to Biratnagar by rail and road, and Jogbani to Biratnagar by road. Transit time, port dwell and pilferage exposure all fall, which matters on a Food Cashew Pressure Steam Boiler; ask for ECTS e-seal handling in the shipping instructions.
No certificate to obtain before shipment
Nepal operates no pre-shipment or pre-export verification of conformity programme. NS marking under the Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology scheme is mandatory for a few imports — steel bar, cement, LPG cylinders and similar — not for processing lines.
Payment and paperwork
For third-country imports the central bank prescribes letter of credit, advance payment or TT, with a ceiling above which an LC becomes compulsory. Nepal Rastra Bank raised those ceilings again in October 2026, so the live limit should be confirmed in writing by the buyer's bank before terms are structured. The declaration is the Pragyapan Patra, completed in Nepali by the customs agent; invoice and packing list are accepted in English.
Site supply and public buyers
Nepal is 230 V, 50 Hz with no official plug standard — Type C predominates, then Type D and Type M, with universal sockets widespread — so capital equipment is better terminated by fixed wiring. Public entities buy under the Public Procurement Act 2063 (2007), administered by the Public Procurement Monitoring Office under the Prime Minister, through the mandatory bolpatra e-GP portal. Section 15 allows international bidding on only four grounds: the goods are unavailable at a competitive price from more than one domestic supplier, no bids came in nationally, a donor agreement requires foreign sourcing, or the entity certifies the goods complex and special in nature. No monetary threshold applies, and international notices and documents must be in English.
