Choosing a road roller
Compaction is specified by what is being compacted, and that leads to configuration before anything else. A single drum machine with a padfoot or smooth drum works subgrade and granular fill. A tandem drum machine finishes asphalt, where a single drum would leave the surface uneven. A pedestrian walk-behind roller does trench reinstatement, footways and confined work no ride-on machine can reach.
Once the configuration is settled, operating weight decides the depth of lift you can compact in one pass, and drum width decides how many passes a carriageway takes. Drive type – mechanical, or hydraulic rear driven – affects gradeability and how the machine handles on soft fill.
What we supply
Single drum machines are listed at weights including 14, 18, 20, 22, 23 and 26 tonnes, in both mechanical and hydraulic rear driven form. Tandem drum rollers start at around 6 tonnes. Pedestrian rollers are hydraulic. Each page carries the machine's configuration, operating weight, drum width and drive type.
Supply for road contracts
A roller is rarely bought alone – it is one line on a road contract. Send the whole schedule and it comes back priced item by item, with any equivalent we are proposing marked as such so your evaluator is not guessing.
Drums and scrapers wear, so those are worth putting on the same order; training can be added to the contract where an operator is new to the machine. We ship on the usual export terms.

Questions buyers ask
Single drum or tandem drum?
Single drum for subgrade and granular fill, tandem drum for finishing asphalt. Using a single drum on a wearing course leaves an uneven surface, which is the commonest specification mistake in this range.
What operating weight do I need?
Weight decides the depth of lift you can compact in one pass, so it follows from the specification you are working to rather than from the size of the job. Tell us the lift depth and the material and we will say which weight class covers it.
What is the difference between mechanical and hydraulic rear driven?
Hydraulic rear drive gives better gradeability and control on soft fill; mechanical drive is simpler to maintain. Which suits depends on the ground and on the service capability where the machine will work.
Do you supply padfoot as well as smooth drum?
Tell us the material being compacted when you enquire and we will confirm what is available for the weight class you need.
Can rollers be supplied with other road plant on one order?
Yes, and it is usually cheaper to do so – one delivery programme and one set of shipping costs across the whole package rather than machine by machine.
