Construction Machinery and Equipments in Nepal
Nothing about a Nepali order is settled at a Nepali seaport, because there is not one. The routing decision is taken in India.
Choosing the gateway
Discharge is at one of three Indian gateways: Kolkata, formally Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port; Haldia; or Visakhapatnam, which offers more depth and less congestion. The cargo then travels in bond under the Treaty of Transit between India and Nepal. The primary customs point is ICD Birgunj, the Sirsiya dry port, the only Nepali dry port railed to the gateways. Biratnagar follows as the secondary route, reached by a rail cargo service out of Kolkata that opened in July 2026, with Bhairahawa third; from November 2025 neither is held to a limited cargo list. Price the movement through to ICD Birgunj and write the chosen gateway into the contract: congestion at one against added mileage to the other is a genuine trade-off.
Sealed transit across India
The Electronic Cargo Tracking System lets a container cross India under seal and clear at the Nepali border without being opened at the Indian port. In use since February 2019, it was widened by an early-November 2025 CBIC amendment adding rail from Kolkata, Haldia and Visakhapatnam into Birgunj, rail and road from Batnaha into Biratnagar, and road from Jogbani. Transit, dwell and pilferage risk on a high-value machine all come down, so put ECTS e-seal handling into the shipping instructions.
No conformity scheme, but a prescribed payment route
Nepal has no pre-shipment or pre-export conformity verification at all. NS marking, administered by the Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology, binds only a handful of commodities — reinforcing bar, cement, gas cylinders — and road plant is not among them. Payment, by contrast, is prescribed. A third-country import settles by letter of credit, advance payment or telegraphic transfer, with a central-bank ceiling on draft and TT payments beyond which the credit becomes obligatory. Nepal Rastra Bank lifted it again in October 2026, so ask the buyer's bank to put the current limit in writing before terms are drafted.
Specification and tendering
Supply is 230 V, 50 Hz, with no nationally adopted plug type, so terminate capital equipment in fixed wiring. The customs agent completes the Pragyapan Patra in Nepali, while invoice and packing list may stay in English. Public buyers use bolpatra.gov.np under the Public Procurement Act 2063 (2007), the PPMO sitting directly under the Prime Minister. Section 15 matters to a foreign bidder: an international invitation is permitted only where a competitively priced supply cannot be had from more than one Nepali supplier, where nothing came in nationally, where foreign sourcing is a condition of donor funding, or where the entity certifies the goods complex and special. No threshold figure attaches, and an international notice and its documents must be in English. What is covered by way of warranty, installation and training is whatever the supply contract says; we are not a spares or service organisation.
