Food Processing Plants and Line in Bangladesh
Chattogram's channel permits a draught of 8.50 to 9.20 m and a maximum length overall of 190 m. Those figures decide how a processing line reaches Bangladesh: the port takes feeder vessels only, so boxes are relayed through Colombo, Singapore, Port Klang or Tanjung Pelepas and no direct mainline service can be assumed. Heavy-lift and out-of-gauge items need pre-planning before an offer is priced, not afterwards.
There is little alternative
Chattogram carries about 92 per cent of national trade and some 98 per cent of container volume, a record 3.52m TEU in FY26. Mongla is a distant second, its container berth draft only 4.5 to 5 m; Payra has no container terminal.
Letters of credit are no longer compelled
The Import Policy Order 2026-2029, gazetted on 24 August 2026, removed the US$500,000 per-year cap on imports made without an LC. Industrial and commercial importers may now buy against purchase or sales contracts with no ceiling, where a container-load programme above that figure previously forced one. The same Order brought first guidelines for free trade zones and bonded warehouses, and made a valid certificate of origin mandatory for any PTA, FTA or CEPA concession.
The 1 per cent rate attaches to the buyer, not the goods
Capital machinery carries a concessionary 1 per cent import tariff, introduced on 9 June 2022, but qualification depends on the importer's compliance status: an industrial Import Registration Certificate and VAT returns filed regularly. The NBR tightened this on 27 December 2023 to require books of accounts and payment challans, after field offices found zero-return filers claiming it. Establish the buyer's IRC class and filing record before pricing on that basis.
Deferred terms
A Bangladesh Bank circular of 10 December 2025 extended the three-year usance facility, formerly confined to capital machinery, to a wider range of capital goods including heavy and specialised industrial equipment, and dropped the advance clearance previously required. Three-year supplier's credit is therefore quotable as a term.
Marks, agents and earthing
No general pre-shipment verification of conformity programme applies. BSTI operates mandatory Certification Mark licensing over 55 imported products, with a marking fee of 0.1 per cent of CIF, but that list is consumer electricals — lamps and ballasts, circulating fans and regulators, batteries, plugs, sockets and household switches — and contains no food processing equipment. The list has been expanded repeatedly, so verify per shipment. An indentor holding sole agency or distribution rights must be registered with the Chief Controller of Imports and Exports under the Importers, Exporters and Indentors (Registration) Order 1981, and one already holding a sole agency needs prior permission to add another foreign supplier. Supply is 230 V, 50 Hz, often quoted locally as 220 V. Universal sockets predominate, accepting types A, B, C, D, E, F, G, I and O but earthed only on B, D, G, I and O: a Type C plug fits without earthing the machine, so state the earthing arrangement for a Food Bowl Cutter rather than leaving it to site.
