Army Equipment in Kenya
Most Kenyan enquiries in this division are for clothing and footwear, and those orders are decided on the specification sheet rather than in a brochure. The attributes held for each item are dimensions, material, colour, listed features, gender where a garment is sized, weight, packaging type and wash care, and every one of them has a procurement consequence. A uniform contract needs the size curve, the gender split and the exact colour agreed in writing before cutting starts, because a colour approved verbally is the commonest source of a rejected delivery. Footwear needs the size run and the upper and sole materials fixed. Wash care is not a minor entry either: a barracks laundry regime will destroy a garment specified for gentler treatment, and the care instruction is the only place that question gets asked before the garments are in service.
What the specification does not contain
Ballistic performance is not among the recorded attributes. The anti-riot armour in this range is described as stab resistant and shock resistant, and no ballistic class is published for it. Where a tender sets a protection standard, that clause has to come from the tender into the enquiry so the item can be checked against it line by line, or ruled out. Nothing is gained by matching a specification on paper that cannot be matched in fact.
Verification happens before the goods sail
Kenya operates pre-export verification of conformity for the Kenya Bureau of Standards, carried out in the country of supply, so certification runs in parallel with production rather than after it. The application should describe the consignment as it will actually be packed, item by item, since verification is against the goods and not against the commercial summary.
Mombasa, and one port to plan around
Container discharge is at Mombasa, at the Kilindini terminals. Mombasa also serves as the gateway for neighbouring landlocked markets, which is worth knowing if a buyer is consolidating a regional order: the Kenyan portion clears locally, while anything moving onward enters a transit regime with its own documentation.
Bidding and power
Public procurement is regulated by the Public Procurement Regulatory Authority, with notices at tenders.go.ke, in English. Where an item draws mains power — a camera, a metal detector, a flood light — the Kenyan figure to build to is 240 V at 50 Hz on Type G outlets, and the nameplate should be confirmed rather than carried over from a 230 V market.
Servicing and spare parts are not part of the offer; what cover exists for installation, training and warranty is set by the signed contract.
