A pneumatic roller rolls on a row of rubber tyres at the front and back, set so the rear tyres cover the gaps left by the front ones. The tyres flex under load and knead the surface, which closes small voids that a steel drum can bridge over. Weight is added with ballast, so one machine can work light on a thin wearing course and heavy on a thick base. The mechanical driven layout uses a gearbox and axle rather than hydraulic motors.
