What a handheld 3D scanner does
A scanner of this type captures the shape of a real object and turns it into a digital model on a computer. The operator moves the unit around the part by hand, and the software joins each frame into one surface. The result is a point cloud or mesh that CAD tools can read, measure and edit.
Because the unit is portable, it goes to the part rather than the part going to a lab. That matters for heavy castings, fixed machine parts and items that cannot leave the site.
Common uses
- Reverse engineering. Scan a worn or obsolete part that has no drawing, then rebuild the model and make a new one.
- Quality inspection. Compare a scanned part with its CAD model to spot shape errors, wear or damage.
- Design and prototyping. Capture a hand-made form or an existing product as the start point for a new design.
- Records and training. Keep digital copies of tools, moulds or samples for later reference.
How to choose the right 3D scanner setup
Scanner choice depends more on your parts than on any single number in a data sheet. Before we quote, we ask three things.
- How accurate must the scan be? Inspection work needs tight tolerance. A design or record scan can often accept less, which keeps cost and scan time down.
- What size and surface are your parts? Small detailed items and large panels call for different settings. Dark, shiny or clear surfaces are hard for most optical scanners and may need a matte spray before scanning.
- Is the main job inspection or reverse engineering? Inspection leans on accuracy and repeat results. Reverse engineering leans on clean surfaces that convert well to CAD.
If an industrial 3D scanner on a fixed stand or a larger system would suit your parts better than a handheld unit, we will say so plainly. We would rather you buy the right tool than return the wrong one.
Pairing scanning with 3D printing
Many buyers use a scanner and a printer together. The scanner captures a part, the model is cleaned up in software, and a printer produces a copy or a test fit within hours. Our 3D printer machine range covers desktop printers, DIY kits and an enclosed box printer, so a lab or workshop can source both from one supplier and one shipment.
A scanner also needs a capable computer to process large scan files. Buyers usually ask us to quote the computer, IT and ICT equipment needed to run the software alongside the scanner itself.
Tender and institutional supply
Quality-inspection and R&D tenders for 3D scanning equipment usually name two key points: accuracy tolerance and part size range. We supply the technical datasheets such a bid needs and plan delivery to your program timeline. Standards bodies such as ASTM International publish test methods used in this field, and our certifications and compliance documents page explains what we can confirm for each order. We do not claim a certificate applies until it is confirmed for this model and your market.
Shipping and ordering
The handheld unit ships in a protective case inside an export carton, which keeps the optics safe in transit. Single units usually travel as part-load freight. Our shipping, Incoterms and export documents page covers how each term splits cost and risk, and lists the papers you receive, such as the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin.
To get a quote, view the handheld 3D scanner and send us the quantity, your typical part size, and your destination port. We confirm voltage and the software licence details before the order is packed, and price each order on its own terms.
