Refrigeration and Cold Storage Equipments in Zimbabwe
Classification comes before anything else
Zimbabwe requires a pre-export Certificate of Conformity under the Consignment Based Conformity Assessment programme, and the point an importer of refrigeration plant needs to grasp is how the scope is drawn: the programme is scheduled by tariff heading. Whether a particular cabinet needs a certificate is therefore answered by the heading under which it is classified, not by a general view about machinery. The tariff classification of each line on the packing list has to be agreed between buyer and exporter at the quotation stage, because the certificate is issued before export and a consignment that turns out to need one cannot be certified retrospectively from Harare.
Mixed shipments deserve particular attention. A container holding display cabinets, a freezer and ancillary items may straddle more than one heading, with only some of them scheduled. Line-by-line classification, confirmed against the current schedule before booking, is the only way to know which items attract the assessment and how long to allow for it.
Reaching a landlocked destination
Zimbabwe has no seaboard. The shorter route is Beira, moving inland along the Beira Corridor; Durban is the established alternative and usually the fallback when sailing frequency or congestion makes the eastern route awkward. The two routes differ in transit distance, border formalities and the inland haulage leg, so compare them on landed cost and total transit rather than ocean freight alone, and check which of them the pre-export certification arrangement has been set up for on the booking in question. Documentation is in English.
Supply and equipment specification
The grid runs at 230 V and 50 Hz with Type G sockets. Because a compressor is rated against one supply frequency, the frequency has to be stated on the order and not inferred from the destination; a machine rated on a different frequency does not carry its performance figures across. The refrigerant to be charged should be nominated in the contract rather than left as a factory choice. Catalogue temperature bands assume an ambient and a usage pattern, so for a Kitchen Freezer Upright Freezer in a back-of-house area or a Compressor Wine Cooler Wine Cellar in a trading room, give the exporter the conditions the machine will actually see and agree the pull-down expected of it. Volume, external dimensions, material and power consumption should all be fixed in writing, since these are the fields a dispute later turns on.
Public sector purchasing
Tenders are regulated by the Procurement Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe and published on its electronic platform at egp.praz.org.zw, where the bid document carries the binding technical schedule. Warranty, installation and operator training are determined by the individual supply contract. Spares supply and after-sales service are not part of the offering and should be arranged locally.
