How frequency and amplitude modulation works
Amplitude is how far the drum moves on each stroke; frequency is how many strokes it makes per second. A high amplitude with a low frequency drives energy deep into thick lifts of clay or rock fill. A low amplitude with a high frequency suits thin, granular layers and the final passes, where too much force would loosen the surface again.
