Food Union (SMS)
A Union (SMS) is a screwed sanitary fitting that joins two lengths of process pipe so they can be taken apart for cleaning or repair. It is made for food, dairy and drink plants, where pipework must stay clean and be easy to open. We supply it in stainless steel as part of our pipelines, valves and fittings range, built in China for export.
How a Union (SMS) joint works
SMS refers to a Swedish standard for hygienic dairy fittings, and it is still widely used on milk and juice lines. A typical union of this type has three parts: a male part with a thread, a liner, and a round nut. A seal ring sits between the faces, and the nut pulls them tight.
The joint can be opened by hand or with a spanner, so staff can split a line without cutting or welding. That makes it a common choice at pumps, tanks and heat exchangers, where parts come out for service.
Materials and build
- Body: usually stainless steel, a food-grade material that resists wash-down chemicals
- Seal: a food-safe gasket, with the rubber grade confirmed at order
- Ends: weld or thread ends, to suit your existing pipe

What to check before you order
Buyers usually ask us to match the union to a pipe they already run, so we recommend sending the pipe size, the wall thickness and the fitting standard on your drawings. SMS, DIN and clamp fittings look alike but do not always fit each other. If your line runs hot water or CIP chemicals, tell us the top temperature so we can suggest a seal.
