A silica gel emergency fire blanket is a sheet of fireproof fibre cloth that you pull over a small fire to cut off its air. Our Fireproof Resistant Emergency Silica Gel Fire Blanket comes in six sizes, from 1 m x 1 m up to 2 m x 2 m, and in two thicknesses, 0.45 mm and 0.8 mm. It is made for kitchens, hotels, shops, ships, cars and fuel stations.
How a fire blanket puts out a fire
The principle is straightforward: you lay the blanket over the burning object, and once oxygen can no longer reach the fuel, the flame dies out. This method, smothering by oxygen exclusion, needs no power, no refill and no training beyond a short drill, which is why a blanket often sits next to an extinguisher in a kitchen or workshop.
Deployment is manual: most blankets of this type are stored in a wall-mounted pouch with pull tapes, so a single person can draw the sheet out almost immediately.

The cloth also works as a spark guard on construction sites, where crews carrying out gas welding or gas cutting lay it over nearby flammable and explosive materials to stop sparks from landing on them. It can also wrap hot pipes and heat equipment as an insulation layer.
