It comes in two grades: 0.45 mm cloth rated to 550 deg C and weighing 30 kg, or 0.75 mm cloth rated to 1100 deg C and weighing 41 kg. A car fire, and particularly a lithium battery fire in an electric vehicle, can burn for a long period and reignite after it appears to be out. Covering the entire vehicle with a large blanket cuts off the oxygen supply, contains heat and toxic smoke, and prevents flames from spreading to adjacent vehicles and structures, so crews can then relocate or cool the vehicle with less danger.

Both grades share the same 6 m x 8 m size and fiberglass cloth. The choice comes down to heat and weight:
- 0.45 mm cloth, 590 g per m2, 30 kg in total, rated to 550 deg C
- 0.75 mm cloth, 800 g per m2, 41 kg in total, rated to 1100 deg C
The thicker grade provides a greater safety margin on intense battery fires, while the lighter version is easier for two operators to handle and store. Blankets of this kind are usually deployed manually and work by smothering, which means they exclude oxygen rather than cooling the fire.
