MICH stands for Modular Integrated Communications Helmet. It was designed as a lighter, more compact follow-on to the older PASGT shape. The ears are less covered, there is no front lip and the back is cut higher. That gives better sight lines and room for a headset, and it lets a soldier shoot from the prone position without the rim pushing the helmet forward.
The shell also takes add-ons such as rails, night-vision mounts and covers, which is why special units often pick it.
