Garage Diesel Smoke Meter
The Garage Diesel Smoke Meter is an opacity meter that measures how much light diesel exhaust blocks. It reads opacity from 0 to 99.9% with a 0.1% resolution and an error of ±2.0%, and it runs on AC 220V at 50Hz. Garages, testing centres and fleet depots use it to check diesel engines against local emission limits.
How the diesel smoke meter works
The meter is split into a test unit and a control unit. The test unit draws part of the exhaust through a shunt path and shines a light through the gas. An air curtain keeps soot off the lenses, so the optics stay clean between tests.
The control unit shows the result on a large LCD screen. It gives both the opacity figure N and the light absorption value K, read to 0.01 m-1. It handles free acceleration tests, records the peak reading and processes the data for you.
Size, weight and set-up
- Test unit: 13.5 kg, about 500 x 300 x 330 mm
- Control unit: 6 kg, about 610 x 500 x 330 mm
- Preheating: about 10 minutes before the first test
- RS232 port for linking to a PC or test lane system
Gas temperature and engine speed inputs can be added as options. Meters of this type usually have a metal case with a heat-resistant probe and hose, and a printed readout is common. These points are typical for the class and confirmed at quotation.
What buyers should check
Emission rules differ by country, so we recommend sending your local test method with your enquiry. Buyers usually ask us about:
- The units the report must show, opacity or K value
- Printer and language needs for the test slip
- Supply voltage if your site does not use 220V
- Spare probes and sample hoses
