Agricultural Machinery and Equipment in Ethiopia
Whether a consignment of farm machinery bound for Ethiopia needs a conformity certificate is settled by its HS code and by nothing else. Pre-export verification of conformity is carried out by the Ethiopian Conformity Assessment Enterprise against a closed list of products, and agricultural tractors are named on that list. A tariff line that does not appear on the list is not caught by the scheme. The first question on any enquiry is therefore the classification, not how the machine is described in a catalogue.
Classify, then price
Because the regime is list-based, two items from the same division can be in quite different positions: the 50 HP tractor sits squarely within it, while other lines in the range need the code checked before anyone can say what applies. Verification under this scheme happens before export rather than on arrival, which means the timetable for it belongs in the production schedule, not in the clearance plan. Where the position of a particular line is not certain, treat it as a point to confirm at quotation rather than an assurance to give.
Two handling points, because there is no seaport
Ethiopia is landlocked. Containers discharge at Djibouti and then move inland by road to the Modjo dry port, where clearance is completed. Every consignment therefore passes through a second handling point, and packing should be specified on that basis: a combine harvester or a tractor-mounted sprayer crated for one quayside lift will be lifted again several hundred kilometres later. Marking and packing lists that survive two sets of hands are worth more here than they are on a direct port-to-door route.
Electrical supply
Mains supply is 230 V at 50 Hz, so a standard Chinese 50 Hz build needs no change of motor frequency and no redesign of control gear. Sockets, however, are Type C and Type F, which is not the domestic Chinese pattern, so anything in the order that terminates in a plug rather than a hard-wired connection should be specified with the destination fitting in mind, or refitted locally on arrival.
Public procurement and documents
Public buying is administered by the Public Procurement and Property Authority, which publishes tenders at egp.ppa.gov.et. Both English and Amharic are in use, and it is sensible to ask at quotation which language the buyer needs on manuals, nameplates and warning plates, since that is a printing decision taken before despatch rather than afterwards.
What this division contains
The range extends to twenty items and includes tractors, agricultural combine harvesters, grain cleaning machines, destoners, maize corn threshers, 500-litre tractor-mounted sprayers and a 6-litre battery hand sprayer. Spares and after-sales service are not part of what we offer, and any warranty, installation or training must be written into the supply contract.
