Supplying Malawi
Malawi is landlocked and served by four corridors rather than one. By tonnage the split runs Durban on the North-South Corridor at around 41%, Beira at 34%, Dar es Salaam at 16% and Nacala at 9% - and Nacala is the only one of the four with a functioning railway into the country; the rest is road. Which corridor suits an order depends on the sailing schedule and on how the machine crates, so we price the realistic options rather than assuming Durban.
Malawi has no pre-shipment conformity programme and no appointed inspection agents. The Malawi Bureau of Standards works at destination, through an imports quality monitoring scheme and permits issued on arrival. One nuance that is easy to miss: for a commodity being imported for the first time, MBS can require a sample to be sent ahead for assessment before the consignment ships. On a first order into Malawi that is worth asking about early, because it sits on the critical path.
Tenders are published by the Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets Authority, and the process is still substantially paper-based. Registered manufacturers can import under the industrial rebate scheme, which relieves duty though not VAT.
