Fire Blanket

Nothing on a fire blanket needs power, wiring or a service visit, which is rather the point of keeping one. Two are published in this category: a Car Fire Blanket For Vehicles intended to be thrown over a burning car, and a Fireproof Resistant Emergency Silica Gel Fire Blanket for smaller smothering duties.

How smothering changes the choice

These products work by excluding air from a fire, so the blanket must cover what is burning and then stay put. Area is thus the first question and handling the second: a large vehicle blanket has to be unfolded and placed by people under pressure, so total weight and weight per unit area decide how many hands are needed and whether one person can manage alone. Resistance temperature and thickness describe what the fabric is built to withstand while it lies there.

Recorded attributes

• Application, and the extinguishing principle stated for the item
• Material, thickness and resistance temperature
• Area weight and total weight
• Dimensions, both opened out and as stored

Storage belongs in the specification as well. A blanket nobody can reach within seconds is of no use, so folded size and weight have to suit the bag, box or bracket where it will live, be that a car park wall, a workshop, a ferry deck or a recovery truck. Fleet operators, car park owners, workshops, and marine and industrial safety distributors are the usual enquirers.

Blankets are consumable items, and replacement after use on a fire is the normal course. Testing and approval requirements vary by market, and we make no claim about which standards apply to you; confirm what your own regulator and insurer require before placing a bulk order.
