Relief tents and blankets: procurement against an emergency, not a catalogue
Bought in quantity, to a standard, at short notice. What to settle before the order rather than during it.
Relief supply is procurement under time pressure, usually by an agency, a ministry or an NGO, and usually against a specification written by someone who has handled the consequences of getting it wrong. The equipment is simple. The requirements are not.
The specification is about conditions, not product
A relief tent is specified by what it has to survive: wind loading, rainfall, ultraviolet exposure and how many seasons it has to stand. Floor area is the figure buyers quote and the least informative one. Fabric weight, coating and frame specification decide whether the tent is still standing in month eight, and in sustained deployment that is the only question that matters.
Blankets are specified by weight, material and whether they will be washed repeatedly. The difference between a blanket for a single distribution and one for a camp in use for a year is real and it is worth stating at order.
Quantity, packing and the last mile
Relief procurement almost always involves a difficult final leg, and the packing is part of the specification rather than an afterthought:
- Pack size and weight should suit how the goods will actually be moved at the far end - by truck, by hand, or both.
- Compression affects the freight substantially on this category, and the volume shipped is often what constrains a budget rather than the unit price.
- Marking and labelling requirements for agency procurement are specific. Send them at order; they are cheap in the factory and expensive afterwards.
Lead time is the real negotiation
For emergency procurement the honest conversation is about what can genuinely be produced in the time available, and in what sequence. We would rather state a realistic programme with a first partial shipment than promise a single date that slips. Ask any supplier for the production programme, not just the completion date - if they cannot give you one, the date is an estimate.
Related supply
Agencies procuring shelter frequently procure water treatment and power generation on the same programme, and military tents where the deployment is longer-term and the specification heavier.
Send the specification, the quantities and the date you need the first shipment to arrive. Request a quotation, or see the relief supply range.
