Cold storage for hot climates: why a room sized in Europe is undersized in Africa

Volume and holding temperature are the easy figures. Ambient temperature and daily load-in are the ones that decide the plant.

A cold room is specified on four numbers, and two of them are routinely left out of an enquiry. Volume and holding temperature are always supplied. Ambient temperature and daily load-in are not, and they are the two that decide whether the plant holds temperature in the month it matters.

Ambient is a specification, not a detail

Refrigeration plant is sized against the heat it has to remove, and a significant part of that is heat arriving through the structure from outside. A unit specified against a temperate design ambient and installed where peak ambient is ten or fifteen degrees higher will run continuously and still drift. This is not a commercial question about buying a bigger unit than you need - it is a specification question, and the wrong answer shows up in the hottest week of the year with the room full.

Tell us the design ambient at the site. If you do not know it, tell us where the room is and we will use the right figure.

Daily load-in is the other missing number

A room holding product already at temperature has a modest load. The same room taking in warm product every day has a much larger one, and the difference is the refrigeration plant, not the insulation. For food processors this is the figure to supply: how much product enters per day and at what temperature.

Where cold storage sits with the rest of the plant

Cold storage is usually bought alongside processing, not separately - see the meat processing and vegetable processing ranges, and the wider food processing plant division. Sizing the room against the line's output rather than against a target volume is the way to get both right, and it is why we prefer to quote the two together.

Documentation on refrigerating equipment

This is one category where the paperwork genuinely differs from general machinery. Refrigerating equipment attracts its own documentation requirements in several import regimes - Mauritius, for example, requires a CFC-free certificate issued in the country of origin and presented at customs. We prepare that with the shipment. Where your market has an equivalent requirement, it is worth naming at quotation so it is built into the schedule rather than chased afterwards.

Supplier questions

  • What design ambient was the quotation calculated against?
  • What refrigerant, and is it available in your market?
  • Is the panel included, and to what thickness?
  • What happens to the quoted capacity if the room is opened more often than assumed?

Send volume, holding temperature, site location and daily load-in. Request a quotation, or see the cold storage range.
